API data show crude supply rise of 4.8 mln barrels

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The American Petroleum Institute late Tuesday reported a nearly 4.8 million-barrel rise in crude supplies for the week ended Jan. 24, according to data from sources. Analysts surveyed by Platts had forecast a climb of 2.1 million barrels in crude supplies. Sources also said the API reported gasoline stockpiles rose 363,000 barrels, while distillate supplies fell 1.8 million barrels. Analysts were looking for gasoline supplies to rise by 1.6 million barrels and distillate inventories to fall by 2.3 million barrels. Following the data, March crude was at $97.23 a barrel in electronic trading, down from the $97.41 close on Nymex.
